In this sermon, our founding pastor talks about the importance of giving and the benefits– the benefits in one’s own life and the enjoyment of it. Here are some excerpts:

The Importance of Giving

“Do you really believe that there is more happiness in giving than in receiving? The Bible certainly teaches that happiness is based on living generously. Let me give you some key words from Holy Scripture:

  • “believe” or “believer” is used 272 times.
  • “pray” or “prayer” is used 371 times.
  • “love” or “loving” is used 714 times. And
  • “give” or “giving” is used 2162 times.

So my question is: Where does the Bible put the most emphasis? It’s pretty obvious that it’s on “giving.” The Bible is a book about giving. This principle… is not something that’s tacked on to the Christian life. It is the essence of Christian living. Jesus was the ultimate Giver.

The Benefits

Now the Bible says, “Give, and it will be given to you… For the measure you give will be the measure you get back” (Luke 6:38, Revised Standard Version). “Give, and it will be given to you.” We’ve all heard that. My question is: “If I give, what do I get back?” And that brings me to the first of the two main divisions of the sermon this morning, namely…

1. HOW GIVING BENEFITS MY OWN LIFEThere are, I believe, seven benefits in being a generous person…

Now let me speak to you for a few minutes about…

2. HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF GIVING, or

“How to enjoy an offering”! 1 Chronicles 29 is an appropriate passage, because it’s the passage that tells how the children of Israel all gave a sacrificial offering to build the Temple in Jerusalem. So it gives us a model of how we should give.

There are, I believe, five ways to enjoy an offering — five ways to get the most out of giving…”
