Reaffirming the Biblical Definition of Marriage

March 20, 2015

In case there is any misunderstanding or confusion as a result of recent developments in one Presbyterian denomination, the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA), regarding the definition of marriage, we at Faith Church, as a member congregation of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) want to clarify and reaffirm our stand on Christian marriage. Click (here) to see a statement by Dr. Jeffrey Jeremiah, Stated Clerk of the EPC, on March 19, 2015, reaffirming the EPC's commitment to the biblical definition of marriage. Click (here) to see the official position paper on The Sanctity of Marriage adopted by the EPC in 2004.

Desiring to be faithful to God's inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word as it has been given to us in the Old and New Testaments, we affirm that marriage, designed and established by God for the well being and happiness of humankind, is a covenantal relationship between one man and one woman, intended to last as long as they both shall live.

As a church committed to the authority of the Bible, we do not and cannot give our approval to 'same-sex marriage,' as so many in our culture today are doing. We hold to this position not because of any hatred or fear of persons with same-sex attraction, but because the Bible is clear in its teachings on this matter. We believe that God loves homosexual sinners and heterosexual sinners alike, and that Jesus died for both homosexual sinners and heterosexual sinners. God's saving grace in Jesus Christ is given free of charge to people who don't deserve it and never will. Which is all of us, homosexual and heterosexual alike.

Faith Church is a place of grace, where Jesus is Lord and everybody counts. However, we cannot approve of what God disapproves. The Bible warns against calling something right or good when God says it is wrong (Isaiah 5:20). At all times, in all things, we seek to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), understanding that it is by our love for one another – and our love for those who disagree with us – that others will recognize that we really are followers of Christ.

Our hearts are heavy for our brothers and sisters in the PCUSA and other churches or denominations which have redefined marriage to give approval to same-sex unions. It is terribly painful to see a church you love, a church you may have been part of for much of your life or even all of it, turn away from the teachings of the Bible.

To those who feel you cannot in good conscience remain in your current church, we encourage you to seek a church home where Jesus Christ is exalted and proclaimed as Savior and Lord, where the authority of the Bible as the inspired Word of God and the final and only infallible rule for faith and life is clearly affirmed, and where the message of the gospel is faithfully declared to a church – and a world – full of sinners who desperately need a Savior. In other words, to people like all of us, who are hopelessly lost in our sins apart from the saving work of Jesus Christ on our behalf.

If God so leads you, we will be happy to welcome you to the fellowship of Faith.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Neil Smith
